FAQs

One similarity shared by both outsourcing and offshoring companies is the employment of highly skilled and qualified staff to fill roles within a separate business or for another client, and it is a service that can be performed anywhere in the world. These two models have their own advantages and disadvantages: Outsourcing means that work can be done locally or overseas by another company. As for offshoring, work is done by a worker employed in another country.

In relation to staffing, the offshore model will give you an opportunity to select your own suitably qualified staff based on your job description. This workforce will be dedicated solely to your operations and will work to and follow your processes and procedures. You will also have direct control over the people you select in terms of their performance evaluation and salaries.

Outsourcing involves partnering with a third-party provider to handle specific business functions or services, utilizing their systems and expertise. In this arrangement, the staff performing these services are employed by the provider and operate under their management. This structure allows the outsourcing provider to manage staff performance and productivity, ensuring alignment with the skills and qualifications required for the outsourced tasks. The provider is responsible for meeting the service requirements as agreed with the client, allowing your company to focus on core business activities while benefiting from specialized support.

In an outsourcing model, the provider will use their own systems: they are the experts, they will take ownership. The provider owns the processes and procedures, and they deliver an output— they take the work as that is where they have expertise. An offshore model will use whatever system, process, and procedure you have in operation, thus making set-up and transition easier.

Offshoring occurs offshore or overseas, not locally. When offshoring, you hire staff through an offshore provider to undertake specific roles, usually on a full-time basis. A key difference is that these staff work for you and only you; they work as directed by you and follow your processes and procedures. Essentially, they are your staff, but they come without the added headaches of employment contracts, payroll, and all things HR as that is the responsibility of the Offshore provider. Offshore staff also typically perform more complex tasks such as Insurance Processing Support, Claims, Broking assistants etc.

A virtual assistant is typically recruited through an intermediary and the staff are usually contractors who you hire and pay directly to perform low-value tasks which do not require elevated skill levels. Staff perform the work you want done, and you set and monitor goals and KPIs. It is possible that a virtual assistant will work exclusively for you, but that is not typically the case.
There are things to consider carefully when hiring VAs directly:
• You have no control over background, criminal, or medical checks.
• Management of employment law, contracting and paying the VAs, and HR is your responsibility.
• VAs generally provide their own IT hardware and security, which could mean gaps in your cyber safety.
• You are responsible for professional indemnity and other insurance.
• The liability for the security and safety of VAs in the workplace rests with you.
